This is an ihe - a spear made from various woods (photo: 'ulei wood).   The short spear (unbarbed) was usually of very plain design. The barbed short spear was of much more elaborate construction.  It could be thrown as a javelin or used as a lance in hand to hand combat.  It can be used as a walking stick (length can be customized to some degree).
